As they ate, Kunon continued his extremely enjoyable conversations with the Royal Sorcerers.
They spoke of interesting experiments, times they had failed, and new investigations into the field of magic. Topics flew by one after the other, each easily outstripping the knowledge Kunon had scraped together through desperate study.
He focused on simply noting it all down. The time he spent here was incredibly valuable, and he carefully recorded all of it so he wouldnât miss a single word.
âA time I messed up? I have all sorts of those storiesâ¦â
When one of the sorcerers turned the question around on Kunon, he hesitated.
Just from listening to them talk, he knew all the Royal Sorcerersâ stories were about considerably high-level magic. Much of what theyâd shared, he had written down word for word because he didnât understand it. When Kunon thought about what he could possibly share with such peopleâ¦
âLike the time I accidentally burned myself with a highly viscous A-ori? Or the time I got dizzy in a makeshift sauna? What about the time I fell down while gliding? Or the time I tried flying but couldnât? Oh, or I could tell you about the final adjustments I made to the animals and the Supersoft-Body A-ori.â
â¦he necessarily wound up talking about his most polished, unique accomplishments.
âHold on a minute.â
âYouâve got a lot of pretty interesting storiesâ¦â
âWait, what do you mean by âflyingâ? On water? How?â
Kunon would have been happy if even one story piqued their interest. But the Royal Sorcerers, who had seen plenty of magic, were nevertheless curious about many of Kunonâs tales.
âDo you have any goals for the future? Even vague ones.â
When Londimonde asked him that question, Kunon told him about the ambition that drove him.
âMy goal is to make eyes out of magic.â
Kunon had nothing to hide. He was determined to achieve what heâd set out to do no matter what. He wouldnât change his mind, even if these pioneers in the field of magic laughed at him and told him then and there that such a dream wasnât possible.
âOh yes? I see.â
But no one laughed.
The fun came to an end with the arrival of Kunonâs father, Arsan.
âDo you understand why Iâm here?â heâd said.
One of the Royal Sorcerers called out, âKunon, itâs your father.â
Kunon had gotten caught up in the conversation and lost track of time. When the meaning of those words finally sunk in, the blood drained from his face so quickly he could feel it.
His father had arrived.
Playtime was over.
Raysha escorted Kunon to the entrance of the Black Tower, where Arsan was already waiting. His imposing figure gave off every sign of his anger.
And thatâs when he said it:
Do you understand why Iâm here?
âUm, Father, how do I put this? I have dinner plans today, so I wonât be able to accompany you home⦠Regrettable though it may beâ¦â
Arsan took no pity on his trembling son as the boy rambled awkwardly.
âTwice. Two times this morning alone I had to hear complaints about my sonâs behavior. What is the meaning of this, Kunon?â
ââ¦Iâm sorry.
